With Halloween right around the corner, it felt only right that my next audio project capture that eerie, spine-chilling energy.

For this assignment, I wanted to create something that sounded like a scene straight out of a horror movie. I headed over to Freesound.org and searched for some of the eeriest, most unsettling sounds I could find. After a bit of digging, I selected around five sounds to layer and mix together, each chosen to make listeners feel uneasy and maybe even jump a little.

This was also my first project using Audacity, so there was definitely a learning curve. It took some time to get comfortable with the tools and editing features, but the process was both challenging and rewarding.

The clip begins with a loud horn blast, the kind that instantly makes you jump out of your seat. Right after that, a little girl humming creeps into the mix, followed by a sinister laugh that adds a truly haunting touch. To build atmosphere, I included the sound of wind howling and ended the clip with knocking and slamming doors, giving it that final jolt of suspense.

Once everything was mixed, the final result didn’t sound quite as terrifying as I had originally imagined, it actually reminded me more of the soundtrack to a spooky amusement park ride. But honestly, I loved that outcome too! It still captured the eerie, Halloween vibe I was going for and helped me learn a lot about sound layering and editing techniques in Audacity.

Overall, this project was a blast to create and taught me how much fun it can be to tell a story through sound.
