For my final project, I decided to take a creative twist on a classic tongue twister: “She sells sea shells by the sea shore.”The idea was simple, record myself saying the phrase repeatedly, as fast as I could, and then layer my vocals over a background track.
What sounded like an easy task at first turned out to be more challenging than expected. After several takes, I realized my vocal recordings were either too quiet or clipping when I tried to raise my voice. Finding that perfect balance between volume and clarity was trickier than I thought.
Working with vocals taught me that audio recording involves a lot more technical skill than just pressing “record.” You have to understand levels, mic placement, and how to manage sound so that your voice blends smoothly with the background. It’s definitely an art, and one I’m still learning to master.
Even though this project wasn’t the hardest one I’ve done, it gave me a new appreciation for content creators and audio engineers who work with vocals every day. There’s so much behind the scenes that most people never think about, from balancing sound levels to perfecting every take.
With more time and practice, I know I’ll get the hang of it. This experience showed me how much there is to learn, and how rewarding it feels when your creativity starts to take shape through sound. You can listen to the track here.
